Updated: Jul 23, 2018

I am totally geeking out over these quinoa recipes! Calgary Private chef knocked me out of the water when he presented me with a weeks worth of meals fit for the Greek Gods themselves! Whether you are needing some warm comfort food on a rainy afternoon or a wanting a cool colorful salad, Calgary Private Chef has prepared something just for you.

Why We're Crazy About Quinoa

As most people know, protein is my go to staple in meal planning. No meal or snack is complete if it's low in protein. This can be very challenging when working with those who are vegan. Quinoa is one of my favorite SUPERFOODS. This SUPERGRAIN is vegan friendly, gluten-free, high in fiber, magnesium and B-vitamins and it's loaded with antioxidants. But that's not even the best part. I present to you, QUINOA!

One half cup of quinoa has 14 grams of protein and 6 grams of fiber. This is especially impressive as most plant-based foods do not contain all essential amino acids required to create a complete proteins, but quinoa does. It is a complete protein. Protein isn't quinoa's only impressive factor either. One cup of cooked quinoa has about 40 fewer calories than the same amount of white rice and white rice has almost 15 times more grams of carbohydrates.

With all of benefits of quinoa, you can see why we could eat it every day!

On the topic of SUPERFOODS, have you heard the buzz on TURMERIC?

I started taking turmeric several years ago when I read about the mental health benefits. Research has shown how turmeric can elevate neurotransmitters such as serotonin, while lowering stress hormones, such as cortisol. But that was just the beginning. It wasn't long before I realized there were so many other benefits.

Research studies suggest that turmeric may treat arthritis, alleviate inflammation, protect against cancer, reduce blood sugar, and help prevent Alzheimer’s disease.

Turmeric's health benefits are attributed to an active ingredient called curcumin. Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric. It has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant

If you are looking to truly see the benefits of Turmeric, the general recommended dose for adults is is 400-600mg of standardized curcumin powder 1-3 times per day.

Notes from the Chef

"Summer is here, full of sunny days and bright colors. Although grill time is good, it's always nice to eat on the lighter and brighter side. Embrace greens and beautiful scenes."

Don't take summer as the time to "throw the baby out with the bath water." No matter what challenges you are facing, a bit of planning is normally all that's needed. I hope this month's batch cook recipe helps to make life a little less hectic. Enjoy

Cheerfully,
